So the camping trip was amazing, as was the days leading up to it. Got to spend some quality time with Gerry and Josh on my back porch at my parent’s house in OB, then got up the next day and headed to Village Creek, AR for the weekend.
The weather was amazing, all sun and no clouds or rain. It was really hot, but not really unbearable. Highlights included some superfly burgers and an incredible hike through the woods and down through a creek. None of us had any cellphone service, so there were no distractions. We really got to forget about time and schedules and all the other stupid shit we worry about every day, and just enjoyed each other’s company and doing whatever we wanted. If you don’t even know what time it is, and if you don’t even care, then that means that you’re having fun. We didn’t even have to worry about a campfire, which is usually a bit stressful on most camping trips I’ve gone on. We kept it burning all night and day, no problems.
The best memory I’ve got from the weekend is of our encounter with some stealth raccoons that completely swiped our chips, marshmallows, and hot dog buns. These bastards sneak up on our table while me and Gerry are asleep (while we were waiting on Phil and Joe to get there) and stole our stuff without making a sound. Or at least not a loud sound. We were pretty tired, so they could’ve made a whole lot of noise and we wouldn’t have known. Anyway, we got a good look at them, and they looked something like this.
So on Saturday we made daggers and spears out of sticks, ready at any moment to take out some raccoon thieves. We would sit around the campfire just chillin until we heard a noise. Then we’d slowly get up and walk over to the edge of our campsite, which was a small ravine with some water at the bottom where the raccoons kept their loot. We had a plan: Joe would stun one, and either Gerry or Phil would rush him with a spear.
We never got one. We had grand plans to make raccoon hats and hamburgers, but it never worked out. But it was still fun, and pretty exhilarating at the same time.
On a musical note, we listened to a little bit of everything. Particularly, I’ve decided that I love Michael Franti and that everyone else should too. In fact, visit his website and get addicted.
Anyway, have a good week/weekend, day/night, whichever applies. And keep chillin.
